The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra has been called "A very talented group of musicians" (The Gathering Note) and "Seattle's new ambassadors of tight chamber ensemble, elegant phrasing, and deeply considered musicianship" (KING FM 98.1). Are you interested in becoming a part of the ensemble for one or more concerts in the upcoming season? Nataly Wickham is a graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. A student of Jane Eaglen, she has appeared as Laura in Verdi's Luisa Miller with Puget Sound Opera Company, as well as Marzelline from Beethoven's Fidelio and Marenka from Smetana's The Bartered Bride at the University of Washington Opera Workshop, the latter of which she also sung in the University of Washington Spring Opera Gala. She appeared as Sandman in the University of Washington’s production of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. She has performed in the chorus of the Tacoma Opera productions of Puccini's La boheme and Bizet's Carmen. She was the winner of the Music Teachers National Association Competition and the Seattle Kiwanis Carl Pitzer Vocal Competition, among others. She is a student of Jane Eaglen.

Kathleen Payne

Kathleen Payne, a Seattle native, is currently completing her graduate studies in Vocal Performance at the University of Washington where her performances have included scenes from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (Susanna), Verdi’s Falstaff (Nanetta), and Menotti’s The Medium (Monica). Ms. Payne earned a Bachelor of Music at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, where she performed the roles of Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Clorinda in Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Her numerous performances at Shenandoah’s Opera Workshop included the roles of Suzel in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, Servilla in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, and Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. In Musical Theatre repertoire, Ms. Payne has performed in many productions, including Luisa in Schmidt and Jones’ The Fantasticks, Kate in Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, and The Beggar Woman in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. She was the Associate Costume Designer of the University of Washington’s production of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and has contributed select designs to their Opera Workshop in scenes from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Bizet’s Carmen, and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, amongst others.

Levi Lindsey

Levi Lindsey graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. A student of Thomas Harper, he has performed the roles of Vašek in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, Gabriel von Eisenstein and Frank in Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Jaquino in Beethoven’s Fidelio, Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff, and Don Curzio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro with the University of Washington’s Opera Workshop. He has also previously performed in the chorus of the University of Washington’s productions of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

Brenna Sluiter

Belinda (Dido and Aeneas)/Chorus (Savitri)

Brenna Sluiter is a recent graduate of the University of Washington, where she earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance. During her time in Seattle, she has sung the role of Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel as well as being featured as the soprano soloist in UW's Spring 2011 performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah. She has also appeared in numerous opera scenes performances both at UW and with Fat Chance! Opera Company, performing the roles of Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, as well as Alice in Verdi’s Falstaff, Adina in Donizetti’s L'elisir d'amore, and Laurie in Copland’s The Tender Land. Ms. Sluiter earned her Bachelor of Arts at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where she sang the role of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. Other roles include Suor Osmina in Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Lady Larken in Roger and Barer’s Once Upon A Mattress. She currently studies with Dr. Kari Ragan.

Jared Ice is a Seattle native whose performances have won positive reviews from Northwest Public Radio. Jared has been seen as The Mayor in Bizet’s Le Docteur Miracle and Midas in Suppe’s Galathea with Tacoma Opera, Alessio in Bellini’s La Sonnambula with Puget Sound Opera, Bob in Menotti’s The Old Maid and The Thief with The Ladies Musical Club of Seattle, Alfio in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana with the Washington-Idaho Symphony, Schaunard in Puccini’s La Bohème with Bellevue Opera, David in Barber's A Hand of Bridge and Michonnet in Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur with Puget Sound Concert Opera and the Father in the University of Washington’s recent production of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel.

Dan W. Miller

Director

Dan W. Miller recently graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in Music History and a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema Studies, where he focused on the theoretical analysis of the works of Richard Wagner. Mr. Miller was invited to attend staging rehearsals of Seattle Opera’s recent production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni by director Peter Kazaras to act as his advisee, and has worked as an intern on Seattle Opera’s productions of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and Der Ring des Nibelungen. At the University of Washington, he worked as Assistant Director and Stage Manager on Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and has directed scenes from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Bizet’s Carmen in the University of Washington’s Opera Workshop.

Renowned violinist Marjorie Talvi will perform with the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra for the first time. SMCO to perform with world-class organist and violinist in May 20 Season Finale

In its final performance of the 2010-2011 season, Music Director Geoffrey Larson leads the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra in a program featuring Mark Andersen and Marjorie Talvi, two soloists of national acclaim. Mr. Andersen will perform a favorite Handel Organ Concerto and Ms Kransberg-Talvi will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

Mark Andersen, organ, was a student at the Paris Conservatory where he studied organ with Marcel Dupre and composition with Nadia Boulanger. Mr. Andersen served as one of four assistant organists to Notre Dame Cathedral under Pierre Cochereau while in Paris. Returning to the United States, he became organist for the Boston Symphony and Artist in Residence to the John Hayes Hammond Castle Museum in Gloucester, MA where he played weekly concerts on the largest residence pipe organ in the world. PBS TV did an hour special on Mr. Andersen and the Castle in 1995. in response to his first concert at Carnegie Hall, the New York Times wrote “Mark gives life to music.” International Artists Records signed Mr. Andersen in 1974 and he moved to New York where he took a position as staff arranger for NBC. While at that position he frequently performed around the world and began recording his now over 30 albums. Mr. Andersen has previously performed the Poulenc Organ Concerto with ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic and Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi, violin, was a student of Sally Thomas, Dorothy DeLay, Jascha Heifetz. She has appeared as soloist with ensembles such as the Boston Symphony, Boston Esplanade Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and Kennedy Center Orchestra. As a recitalist, Ms Kransberg-Talvi has performed at M.I.T, Gardner Museum, Getty Museum, and on the well-known Bargemusic Series in New York. Ms Kransberg-Talvi served as Concertmaster and Resident Artistic Director for the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, where she collaborated with such artists as Sidney Harth, Franco Gulli, Lorin Hollander, Ani Kavafian, Joseph Silverstein and pianist Ralf Gothoni. Ms Kransberg-Talvi has also served as concertmaster for the Pacific Northwest Ballet and has appeared on tour with the company in New York City, Washington D.C, and Istanbul, Turkey. A prominent educator in the Seattle area, many of Ms Kransberg-Talvi’s students have received national and international acclaim in performance.

The concert will be at 7:30 PM May 20 at Daniels Recital Hall, 5th Avenue and Marion St. Seattle.

It's not very often that concertgoers get to experience the birth of a new orchestra, but Seattleites will get this rare chance Saturday, November 21 at 7:30 PM. The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, founded just this year by talented collegiate music students and graduates in our area, will present its first full program as a symphonic ensemble. Seattle's beautiful Daniels Recital Hall will be the host of our debut performance, a landmark former church on Fifth Avenue and Marion Street with a wonderful acoustic, saved from the wrecking ball one year ago. We couldn't be more excited to announce our program, a veritable tour-de-force of our favorite repertoire: Haydn's jovial "London" Symphony No. 104, Bruch's stirring Violin Concerto No. 1, and Mozart's elegant "Prague" Symphony No. 38. We are pleased to feature Seattle's own virtuoso violinist Andrew Sumitani for Bruch's romantic masterpiece. Tickets cost only $10 for general admission, $8 for students and seniors (65+) with ID, and admission is free for those under 16. Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards at the door. Be sure to join us for a reception following the concert.

Conductor

A native of Seattle, Geoffrey Larson is the founding Music Director of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra. Larson was named a Fellow at the Bard Conductors Institute as the course’s youngest member in 2007, and was personally selected by George Hurst to be one of four conductors to participate in master classes at London’s Royal Academy of Music in 2008. He counts Peter Eros, George Hurst, Harold Farberman, Alastair Willis, Christian Knapp, Raphael Jimenez, Wolfgang Harrer, Denise Ham, Robert Houlihan, and Rodolfo Saglimbeni among his teachers in conducting. The Gathering Note and Classical KING FM have hailed Larson as one of Seattle’s foremost young conductors.

As a clarinetist, Larson holds a degree from Michigan State University where he was a student of Caroline Hartig. He has given performances with ensembles such as the Seattle Modern Orchestra, Saratoga Chamber Orchestra, and Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra. He has performed in Michigan, Texas, Oregon, Illinois, and Washington, including a radio broadcast on Seattle’s KING FM. He has also given solo performances in Kanazawa, Japan and Vienna, Austria. Larson performs on clarinet with the Sakura Winds, an award-winning woodwind quintet.

Residing in the greater Seattle and Tacoma areas, these musicians each have exceptional talent and experience and are soloists in their own right.
